Pressure Sensitive Labelers

Label Types and How They Impact Selecting Labeling Machines

It’s important to consider the type of label you’re using when you’re shopping for a labeling machine. Why? Because whatever label you want to apply onto your product may not be compatible with every labeling machine out there.

Let’s talk about a few different types of labels and the machines they’re most compatible with.

Pressure-Sensitive Labels

You may know pressure-sensitive labels as self-adhesive labels. They adhere to a container when pressure is applied; this ease of use makes them perfect for standard product labeling.

Essentially, these are standard labels, which can be used with most standard pressure-sensitive labelers, such as Labelette’s APS and SPS lines. They would not work with, say, hot glue labelers or sleevers.

Let’s delve into those types of labels next.

Pressure Sensitive Labelers

Sleeve Labels

Sleeve labels are wraparound, so you can apply them around your entire container. What sets them apart from pressure-sensitive labels (apart from the obvious distinction of not being pressure-sensitive) is that they’re applied using heat.

A sleever drops the label around the container, then it moves through a tunnel with a heated interior. This shrinks the label, causing it to conform to the shape of the container.

Instead of a labeling machine, these labels are applied with a dedicated sleeving machine. These can work in conjunction with other labelers by applying top-down labels to, say, caps before starting sleeving.

These sleevers can also apply tamper-evident bands, which can indicate to the customer whether the container has already been opened or not.

Top-Down Labels

Make sure that whatever machine you’re considering has this capability, as it’s not guaranteed. It could also be available as an upgrade. Whatever the case, make sure you discuss this with the vendor before you pull the trigger on a purchase.

Paper Labels

If you want to apply paper labels to your containers, especially if they’re cylindrical or rectangular in shape, then you’re going to need a hot glue labeling machine. Hot-glue labelers are the most effective choice for this type of label, as they can make adjustments for both the thickness of the glue and the label itself.
